Nazia was
much more than a Pop singer. She continued with her education and,
after taking her law degree, worked as a political analyst in the
United Nations. Due to her interest in children, she was offered the
opportunity to represent UNICEF for children's causes. Her music
travelled with her and she decided to use it for a cause dear to her
heart.
Nazia joined
the United Nations in 1991 as an intern in 'Women's International
Leadership' program and then went on to work in the UN Department of
Political and Security council Affairs.
Using the
almost ‘cult status’ she earned in the music world Nazia went on to
do what she liked to do most, social work. Supported by the Ministry
of Interior & Narcotics Control she formed an NGO known as BAN
(Battle Against Narcotics) to help combat/reduce drug addiction in
Pakistan. Concerned about the fast spreading menace, Nazia and her
singing partner adn brother, Zohed launched a nationwide 'demand
reduction' and awareness program through their music.Referred
to as 'Music with a cause' their first song entitled, 'Nasha Na
Karo' (Don't do Drugs) not only topped the charts in Pakistan &
India but also attained a No. 1 position on the Indonesian Top
10.
Nazia was
also an active member and participant of social organizations such
as The Voice of Women, National Youth Council, Business and
Professional Women, The Rotary Club, The 300 Club (UK) and Inner
Wheel Club for Disabled Children and organized fund raising programs
for the United Nations.
She believed
in using "music for purpose" — to care for and champion the cause of
the downtrodden and the under-privileged. Social Service was her
real passion. She regularly organised Polio and eye camps,
contributed to the establishment of mobile clinics, assisted in the
running of the schools, and provided medical
supplies. |
